In a hot pan add oil and when the oil heats up add ingredients for tempering and allow the mustard seeds to splutter.
Add in the chopped onions, ginger and chilli along with the curry leaves and saute till its soft.
Add in the chopped tomatoes and salt and saute further.
Add in the dry powdered spices and saute till the tomatoes disintegrate.
Add the bread pieces and mix carefully.
Pour the milk and and lower the fire. Do not keep on mixing after adding the milk. The uppumav will turn mushy. Fry the bread on low fire for few seconds to give crunch to the bread.
Serve immediately.
