Low calorie and a filling meal.. you can have your browns and greens in a single dish. Raw papaya is  low in calories and very high in Iron and a perfect diet meal. It flushes away all the parasites in your digestive track too. Horse gram on the other hand is a legume used to reduce water retention in your body and a slow digesting food which keeps you full for a prolonged period of time..  Horse gram is said to be more beneficial during the winter times to help your body temperature normal. Make this dish into a soup by adding 2 cups of water/stock and enjoy during the cold days. 🙂

Soaking time: over night

Serves : 4

Ingredients:

  • Raw papaya – 250 g (grated)
  • Horse gram – 1/2 cup
  • Water/stock – 1 cup

Ingredients for pulsing:

  • Fresh grated coconut/desiccated coconut   – 1/2 cup
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Green chilies – 2
  • Turmeric powder – 1/8 tsp
  • Garlic – 1 (optional)

Ingredients for tempering:

  • Oil – 2tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Dry chilli – 2 (teared) /Chilli flakes – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 stem

Method:

  1. Wash and clean the horse gram. Be careful to look out for any stones or impurities.
  2. Soak it overnight to help cook faster. Horse gram takes a long time to cook. Its fast to pressure cook it.
  3. Pressure cook the horse gram adding water to it. It takes almost 15 mts in the pressure cooker. If you want to cook in a pan it’ll take more than half an hour.
  4. In the mean time you can grate the raw papaya.
  5. In a blender add all the ingredients for pulsing and pulse few times to a corse texture.
  6. Heat a pan and add oil.
  7. When the oil is heated add in the ingredients for tempering one by one. Be careful not to burn it.
  8. Now you can add the grated raw papaya and saute well. Raw papaya cooks very fast.
  9. When the raw papaya starts to soften add in the cooked horse gram and the pulsed ingredients and combine well.
  10. Add salt and cook for a few more minutes till the water in the raw papaya evaporates and the dish is soft and fluffy. Enjoy as salad ! or an accompaniment to white rice.
  11. If you want to make it in to a soup this is the time to add water. You may want to add a bit of salt and pepper too.
  12. Allow the water to boil and enjoy.
